Post #22: Stock icon, Marie Antoinette, HP

Yup, I'm not dead. It's been a hard couple of months though, bot for RL ralated reasons and internet related reasons.
Long story short after the striketrough and the following drama I moved to IJ, and then took some time to decide what to do with this community. I decided to keep posting my work here as well as on my new journal, so sorry for having disappeared for a while ^//^

Wow! Do you make tutorials?
Ink: every now and theninkaddict on September 9th, 2007 06:34 pm (UTC)
Sure, what icons would you like to see tutorials for?
frail_delusionfrail_delusion on September 9th, 2007 07:41 pm (UTC)
Anything that will get me that merky effect like in #1,2,3,10 and 52, for example.
Ink: over the rainbowinkaddict on September 9th, 2007 09:03 pm (UTC)
Well, in 1 and 52 the effect was already there on the original pic, i just enhanced the colors a bit. On the other icons it's a combination of white soft light layers, a grainy gray texture set on darken and then used again on color burn with a very low opacity. I could write a complete tut if you'd like, but basicallky the effect that you want is obtained playng with that kind of layers.
frail_delusionfrail_delusion on September 9th, 2007 10:37 pm (UTC)
Alright I think I can figure it out. I've just got to search for some good grainy textures. But I've already experiments with some that I have and I can see them coming along well.
Ink: sticks calamaioinkaddict on September 10th, 2007 08:45 am (UTC)
Glad to hear it's working!
I used one of my own textures, the set it's here if you're interested. I just blurred or brightened it to fit the needs of the images.
frail_delusionfrail_delusion on September 10th, 2007 02:34 pm (UTC)
Great! I'll download them all..and will credit.
Thanks a lot

WOW! awesome icons. i was curious too so im replying here. can u just maybe show me a gray texture - like how much grain or how dark gray? or does it really matter. i really wanna try this effect. thanks! ohh - is the white soft layer what gives it the creamy color?
shalowatershalowater on September 10th, 2007 02:35 am (UTC)
i just tried now and im using PSP so its burn not color burn but i think i did ok. what do u think?

oh i have PSP and PS. i was using PSP at the time and was already working on different coloring on this icon.

ps. id love a tut on one of those red eye tree frog if u are up to it. those frog fascinate me. id love to own one. im gonna save those icons and maybe a couple more and will credit you when used.

awesome work. im glad your back!!

Re: edit.
Oh, it looks lovely!
Yup, it's the soft light layers that give the creamy effect, mostly they "lighten" the image so that the texture on darken can do her work. I geuss screen layers would work too, but I find the result too harsh for this kind of efferct. It's not really important how much grainy or gray the texture is, I used the same on on most of this batch and simply blurred it a bit or brightened/darkened it to fit my needs.

The frogs are among my favorite, I'll start working on a tut ASAP :)
I use PS7, it's not relevant for the general coloring, but I used some selective color layers for the frogs, so you'll need to use that.

Re: thanks!!! its fun
i actually messed up on that one - i think i used multiply instead of darken and i still havent used color burn cause i havent used PS. i dont see a huge difference in those - PS is the best for color (selective color) - i usually only use it for that. i find PSP more user friendly for me ;)and i think that one looks too grainy still for that effect we are going for.

hehe. cant wait for the frogs. did u say used or didnt use selective color for your landscape ones. mine up there is not as bright as yours but i still like it. i have tried again im super excited cause i like this one better. i may have even translated to PSP. i used channel mixer for the coloring. i couldnt find my base i used above so i used another one. it has more sky then clouds.

here is my result (with and without extras)

again thanks sooooo much. im gonna add your name to my resources right away.

if u wanna see my layers just let me know :)

ahhhhhhh! i love your icons! they're very different, a refreshing change from what you usually see. i absolutely love the way you made dan's eyes green in 98 and 99. it's always really bothered me that he has blue eyes, i mean, how hard would it be to get green contacts or something? yeap, so those made me go 'ahhh, the way things SHOULD be..' thanks for sharing!!

Thank you!
It was my first try at iconing HP so I'm very glad it worked ^^
I was a bit worried by Harry's hair, I couldn't seem not to make them a bit red, if I wanted the green eyes *puots*. But you're right, Daniel's baby blues bothered me too much not to try and get them at least greenish.
